unspoken

25 September 2000

I think my taste in music is shifting again. That happens a lot to me-- my whole life tends be organized in quarterly phases. To a great extent, that means that the whole world seems relatively new and exciting every 3 months or so, but in regards to music, it just turns my CD collection (which, as it has been pointed out to me, is actually quite good and varied) into a big bore. In an attempt to counter this effect, I recently invested in some new CDs:

Stereolab: Dots and Loops

Languid, beepy, sexy French music. I find this CD to be oddly relaxing and incredibly addictive. I can put it on repeat for a whole night and never get bored, but it is subtle enough that I can do homework while listening without getting too distracted. Stereolab has kind of an retro analog electronic music sound so it might sound cheesy to some, but I find their music genuinely creative and ingenious.

Bjork: Debut

Why, oh why, did I never buy this CD before? It's cemeted me as a true Bjork fan more than Post, Telegram, and Homogenic combined. This CD makes me want to go and find all her EPs, remixes, foreign releases, and, of course, her new album Selmasongs. It's as if I found the missing piece of the Bjork puzzle-- now I can go through and hear her progression as a musician and innovator.

Pet Shop Boys: Discography

So far this is kind of underwhelming... I like a lot of what I've heard from the Pet Shop Boys; I just get the feeling this was the wrong first album to buy. It sounds rather flat against the other CDs I bought in this batch. Anyone have any better PSB suggestions?

The Beloved: Conscience

More beepy hipster music, but the Beloved, I believe, are British rather than French. It's really melodic and infectious, but has a complex layer-y side to it, too. I sing along a lot- the lyrics are fun and a wee bit earnest. My friend Brianne makes the funniest face when she starts dancing to this album, which is almost reason enough to love it.

In light of these recent purchases, can anyone tell me why the hell I still own Dave Matthews Band CDs? Ideas the creative disposal of them and other similar crap can be sent here.
